Shining a Light on Women’s Rugby

Our work throughout the HSBC SVNS 2024-25 season has shown that there’s so much more to sport than winning: there’s camaraderie, exercise, mental and physical conditioning, encouragement – and teamwork.

Historically, the Lloyds7s Rugby Tournament has involved male-only teams competing for the grand prize. In 2024, Caroline Henzell and Joss Linney wanted to change this – with GB’s female 7s team making it to the Olympics, and in the increase of awareness for contact rugby for women, it was important to bring this to the tournament.

After a fantastic reception last year, the team that brought the women’s game to Lloyds created Women In The City 7s (WIC7s), and three teams trained with female GB7s players and coaches ahead of an exhibition tournament on Thursday 15th May, before the finals took place.

Women In The City 7s (WIC7s)

Founded earlier in 2025, WIC7s allows women to get involved in contact rugby – something which is quite rare in a professional sector. This allows the game to be balanced more easily with other commitments.

Through WIC7s, there is a place and a club that new players can learn and build on skills, whereas experienced players can develop and thrive – and most importantly, provide social and networking opportunities for women on a cross-industry basis, all based around a love of one thing: rugby.
